SchoolMessenger: Sunday, November 27, 2016 (Happy Week 14!)

Good evening, Carroll Leaders! I hope that all of our families enjoyed a healthy and happy Thanksgiving. This is Mrs. MacWilliams calling with your weekly updates and reminders for the school week of Monday, November 28 - Friday, December 2.

It's Humility Week! The Carroll community will be recognizing and strengthening modesty in ourselves and in each other.

Carroll will host all WCPSS magnet middle schools on Wednesday evening at 6:00 p.m. as potential magnet families in Wake County explore their middle school options. Please be sure to share all of the exciting things happening in your child's classrooms with friends and families of rising 6th graders.

Carroll's fall theatre production, And Then They Came for Me, is not something to be missed. Please join us this Thursday, Friday, or Saturday, and prepare to be impressed. The show begins at 7:00 p.m. each night.

This Friday is an Early Release Day for all students. Please prepare for an 11:45 a.m. dismissal.

3 1/2 weeks until holiday break, Carroll Leaders. Let's make them count.

Have a great night!

Restart Opportunity

I am writing to inform you of a possible opportunity for our school beginning in the 2017-18 school year – one that I believe will benefit our students greatly.

Last night, the Wake County Public School System Board of Education voted to take an initial step regarding more flexibility in how we operate by submitting an application to the state Board of Education.

If our application is approved by the state Board of Education, our school will be given the remainder of this school year to plan for implementation to begin in the 2017-18 school year.

This shows great promise for improving how our students learn. While our areas of flexibility are focused on funding and scheduling options, we are not required to make any significant changes.

Your input is invaluable as we begin to plan for next school year. We will soon be reaching out to you with opportunities to have a voice in this process. In fact, upon learning about the Board of Education’s intended vote, Carroll’s Principal Advisory Council started to dig into this work yesterday afternoon.

This outreach might include a survey, and it will certainly include informational sessions for you to attend, ask questions, and offer suggestions.

We are excited about the possibilities for exercising flexibility in how we operate our school and how we serve you and your child. We will be contacting you once state approval is granted to let you know how you can be a part of this exciting opportunity.

A Letter to My 1003 Middle School Children

Your hopes and dreams matter to me. You are important, and you bring genius to our school. My goal is learn about, from, and with you in order to best serve and support you. Yes, my work is all about you. If your goal is to become a chemical engineer, my goal is to offer you learning opportunities that will deepen your knowledge in converting raw materials into a variety of products. If your goal is to become a professional athlete, my goal is to provide you with the training opportunities that will prepare you with the physical stamina to compete against the strongest of opponents. Web designer? Fantastic. I want you to be using hypertext and hypermedia in class, so that you are ready to begin designing right now. Regardless of where you are headed in this world, my job is make what you do each and every day at school relevant to you and your future.

Also, while we’re working on your #professionalgoals, I want you to have some fun. This is middle school, and technically, you’re still a kid. Let’s go places. Let’s find out what other people in the world are doing. You need to be exploring and investigating. Your challenges are my challenges. Are you ready for some off campus learning? Do you want a professional business partner? Are you interested in making decisions alongside your teachers? Yes? Great. I can arrange for all of that to happen, but I need your help.

In order to personalize your learning experience and maximize our success in working together, you’ll have to make two really important commitments that are deeply rooted in our work around leadership and character. Easy, right?

1. Work hard. I’m not expecting you to be the best at everything you do, and I certainly don’t expect you to know all of life’s answers with just 11, 12, 13, or 14 years under your belt. However, I am asking you to focus on doing your personal best. You need to try really hard, even when the work is super challenging. I believe in you. You can do anything you set your mind to doing. Really. It’s true.

2. Be kind. #Otherpeoplematter. It’s not cool to disrespect others. Making somebody else feel bad doesn’t make you smarter, funnier, or better, and being mean does not translate into wealth, power, or success. Adulthood is right around the corner, and you never know who will be your next door neighbor, your potential boss, your loan officer, or your spouse. That kid who you think is uncool now, just may be the next Nick D’Aloisio. Google him. Seriously.

Character trumps intelligence, but together, they create the human jackpot. Do yourself - and everybody else a solid, focus on both.

We have Genius Day coming up soon --- a day filled with choice, freedom, and opportunity. Your own individual learner profile will drive your schedule. Imagine if every day you could lead your own learning, and select opportunities to grow that were specifically designed and personalized for you. This could become the new normal at Carroll, and it requires your leadership.

I encourage you to set ambitious Wildly Important Goals this year and always. Shoot for the stars. Take risks, own your words and actions, and move mountains.

Opportunities and privileges are about choices --- choices that you make every week, every day, every hour, and every minute at school, at home, and beyond.

Our future is in your hands. Make your choices wisely.

You matter.

SchoolMessenger: Sunday, November 13, 2016 (Happy Week 12!)

Good evening, Carroll Leaders. This is Mrs. MacWilliams calling with your weekly updates and reminders for the school week of Monday, November 14 - Friday, November 18.

Thank you, thank you, thank you to our entire school community for making our wonderful PTA's No Fuss Fundraiser a huge success. We met our $10,000 goal, and our students and staff have earned a Genius Day!

It's College and Career Readiness Week! Don't forget to wear some college gear on Wednesday, Leaders. It's also School Psychologist Week. We are so incredibly lucky to have Dr. Mary Whitehouse on our team. Happy School Psychologist Week, Dr. Whitehouse! Annnnnd...it's Gratitude Week! I cannot wait to find out what makes all of the members of the Carroll family feel grateful. To get into the spirit, check out what makes Kid President thankful (<-- Watch! : ) by visiting the Carroll Leadership Chronicle.

On Thursday, (I incorrectly communicated Tuesday, initially) don't worry about putting dinner together for your family. Instead, head over to the Panera Bread, located at 4421 Six Forks, between 4:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. for a Carroll Dine-Out Fundraiser. I'm looking forward to seeing you there!

It's going to be another awesome week at Carroll Leadership in Technology Magnet Middle School. Have a great night!
