First Day of School

Today was a very smooth opening of school at Carroll Leadership in Technology Magnet Middle School. The last vehicle in carpool was on our campus by 7:26 a.m., which I believe is a record for clearing Rowan on the first day of school. Whooooo-hoooo!

Students excitedly entered the building to find faculty and staff who were ready to dive into community building and engage students in meaningful learning. For our kids who had questions, many lead learners carried 'Ask Me!' signs. The leadership and self-advocacy skills that our students exhibited were impressive, especially considering Carroll's super early start time, following the lazy days of summer.

In all classes, students participated in relationship and community focused activities, including LEAD, Positivity Project, and challenge-based learning opportunities.

By the end of this week, students will have finalized their leadership proposals to name their core teams, participated in the VIA Character Strengths Survey (You should take it, too. It's free at http://www.viacharacter.org), and jumped into Covey and supporting challenges around Dream, Learn, Lead, & Innovate.

In coming weeks, all students will participate in a Leadership & Team Building field trip to Go Ape Zipline and Treetop Adventure at Blue Jay Point. More information is on the way.

We're truly in for a phenomenal school year!

What has the Carroll Team been doing to prepare for the 2016-2017 school year?

Last March, an energetic bunch of Lead Learners from the Carroll family traveled to Atlanta for the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development Annual Conference and Expo.

In June, another excited group traveled to Denver for Digital Promise's Summer Learning Conference. The following week, another team from our family attended the International Society for Technology in Education Society Annual Conference & Expo.

When our entire team returned to Carroll on Friday, August 19, we jumped right into Learner Agency, Professional Learning Teams, Social Emotional Learning, Positive Behavior Interventions & Supports, Collaborative Planning, Meaningful Assessment to Personalize Learning, Community Building, and more! (Our Agenda) We enjoyed a Pig Pickin', hosted by our amazing PTA, and we traveled our base attendance zones to meet with some of our students.

On Thursday, August 25, we had a blast mingling with families at our Community Kickoff. Students picked up their schedules,  enjoyed music from DJ Combs, and ate some delicious treats from a selection of food trucks.

Friday, August 26, we welcomed students for Leadership Orientation. Students met Carroll's leadership team, their core teachers, and our elective specialists. Core teachers led students through team building tasks and games, and students walked their 2016 schedules.

It has been quite an adventure preparing for an incredible 2016-2017 school year! We can't wait to welcome students back officially on Monday morning.

Do students need a backpack and supplies on the first day of school?

By Tuesday, August 30, all students will have access to their assigned locker. Until that time, we strongly encourage students not to bring a backpack or supplies to school. After Monday, students will not be permitted to carry backpacks between 7:30 a.m. and 2:15 p.m., and students will be required to follow Carroll's locker schedule, which provides students access to their lockers before 1st period, before lunch, and after the last period of the day.

Will Carroll have an Open House?

In partnership with our amazing PTA, the Carroll team invites all families to join us for Dinner on the Lawn and Open House from 5:00 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 22.

5:00 p.m. - 5:50 p.m. Dinner on the Lawn
6:00 p.m. - 6:20 p.m. General PTA Meeting
6:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. Open House

Why does my child need a lock?

Carroll will provide all students with a lock for their hallway lockers. However, students are required to supply their own locks for their PE lockers. PE lockers are located in the locker rooms.

When will students have access to their lockers each day?

Students will be allowed to access their lockers at the start of the school day, between 7:00 a.m. - 7:30 a.m., before their lunch period, and after the last bell at 2:15 p.m. Students who have a lunch bag/box will have access to their lockers following their lunch period.

What is Carroll's Cell Phone Policy?

Students are not permitted to use cell phones during the instructional day. Between 7:30 a.m. and 2:15 p.m., cell phones must be kept in student lockers at all times. Students may request to contact their parents in Student Services.

What is Carroll's Dress Code?

Carroll students must adhere to the WCPSS Code of Student Conduct. Per these guidelines, in order to help keep our students focused on learning without distractions, we expect all students to dress appropriately. The Code of Student Conduct prohibits disruptive, provocative, revealing, profane, vulgar, offensive, obscene or unsafe clothing or bodily appearances. The following types of clothing are not permitted:

  • exposed undergarments
  • sagging pants
  • see-through or excessively short, tight or revealing clothes
  • bare midriff or strapless shirts
  • clothing with lewd, indecent or vulgar messages or illustrations
  • clothing that advertises products or services illegal to minors
  • head coverings
  • chains, spikes or other accessories that could be perceived as or used as a weapon
  • clothing that violates the school system's policies against gang and gang-related activities

What are Carroll's Carpool Procedures?

All vehicles must enter our carpool by way of a right-hand turn off Rowan. Left-hand turns are not permitted. Once on our campus, vehicles must fill up both lanes that run parallel to Rowan. This alleviates congestion throughout our neighboring streets. At the turn leading down to the sidewalk, vehicles merge to create a single line along our sidewalk, which marks our drop-off zone for students. Vehicles must pull as far forward as possible to expedite the drop-off and pick-up process. Dropping students off on Rowan, Camelot, neighboring streets, or the bank parking lot is not permitted.
