4th Quarter Message

Dear Carroll Families,

Throughout the 2015-2016 school year, the Carroll team has been highly engaged in the implementation of the Wake County Public School System’s Strategic Plan. In direct alignment with this plan, Vision 2020, our priority focus continues to be supporting an annual graduation rate of 95% by the year 2020.

We believe that every student is uniquely capable and deserves to be challenged and engaged in relevant, rigorous, and meaningful learning each day. We expect every student to learn, grow, and succeed while we eliminate the ability to predict achievement based on socioeconomic status, race, and ethnicity. All student leaders at Carroll must and will be held to leadership excellence.

After careful review of district-wide data, with the start of Quarter 4, our team will be strengthening expectations for all school community members, both academically and behaviorally. We will review, clarify, and uphold school-wide leadership expectations, offer increased opportunities for parent involvement, and host families for celebratory and informational events.

Within the framework of existing 6th and 7th grade teams, we will increase opportunities for effective collaboration, co-teaching, and inclusion among instructors, reduce cluster groupings of identified students to a maximum of 30% per class, and provide a 30:1 maximum student to teacher ratio in all core classes.

Through an acceleration model with built-in scaffolding structures, all 6th and 7th grade students will be exposed to high level content, including all Math Plus standards. Our high-impact instructional framework will use acceleration to immediately get all students moving in the right direction, make standards and learning goals explicit to students, tackle student motivation, build students’ self-efficacy so that they become active, academically sound participants in class, encourage students to persevere, rather than give up, address the problem of skills gaps within the context of new learning, and improve students’ vocabulary. Strategically designed instructional support systems will provide personalized learning opportunities for all students, and will not impede the rigor, scope, and sequence of existing Math Plus courses.

At Carroll, we are committed to becoming the top performing middle school in Wake County --- and beyond! Together, we will achieve greatness. As a friendly reminder, please let your voice be heard by participating in our Family Feedback survey, which can be found on our website at http://www.wcpss.net/carrollms. We’re looking forward to hosting you on Tuesday, April 12 at 5:30 p.m. for our second Carroll Round Table Vision event.

As always, please don’t hesitate to contact me with any questions, comments, and/or concerns.

Thank you for your continued support.
