SchoolMessenger: Sunday, November 8, 2015

Good evening, Carroll Cougars. This is Mrs. MacWilliams calling with your updates and reminders for the school week of Monday, November 9 - Friday, November 13.

Thank you to all of the Carroll Community members who represented our wonderful school this past Saturday at the Wake County Public School System's Magnet Fair. When teachers, students, and parents come together, great things happen.

This week is Spirit Week at Carroll. I can't wait to see our students in their mix-match outfits on Monday, dressed up for Super Hero Day on Tuesday (as a friendly reminder, no masks, please), heading back in time for Throw-Back Thursday, and celebrating their team colors of black, white, and gold on Friday.

School will not be in session on Wednesday, November 11 in observance of Veteran's Day.

I'm looking forward to joining Mr. Watkins, Carroll's Athletic Director, and all of our Cougar athletes and coaches who participated in fall sports for our first Athletic Banquet this Tuesday evening, starting at 6:30 pm. Pizza will be served in the cafeteria. Athletes will eat for free --- friends and family are invited to eat for $2.00/person.

On Friday afternoon, all Carroll students are encouraged to join faculty and staff for our first dance of the 2015-2016 school year. Permission slips will be sent home tomorrow, and tickets will be on sale this Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 7:00 am - 7:30 am for $5.00/student. Food will be served at an additional cost.

Thank you for your continued support. Have a great night!

Carroll Identified as a Low Performing School

I hope the school year has started successfully for all of you. For the second consecutive year, the state of North Carolina has assigned letter grades to each school in the state.

Our school system does not believe a single grade can accurately reflect the many ways in which your child grows in our schools. For that reason, the Wake County Public School System has created individual School Progress reports that quickly and easily offer a one-page summary of Carroll Leadership in Technology Magnet Middle School.

You can find the summary for our school at http://www.wcpss.net/schoolreportcards.

In North Carolina, schools assigned a single letter grade of D or F are considered low-performing unless the school as a whole exceeds its expected academic growth. Unfortunately, Carroll received D did not meet expected growth.

Please know that this description in no way reflects our belief about your child’s potential and performance. Our staff cares deeply about your child’s daily progress and is happy to answer any questions you might have.

Also be aware that we will develop an improvement plan that specifically addresses how the school will improve both the school performance grade and our school growth score. The plans for all of the schools with this identification will be presented to the School Board on Tuesday, October 20. After that, they will be made available for review before being submitted for state and local school board approval.

Thank you for your support of our school.

We're famous! Carroll Pep Rally: Thursday, October 8

SchoolMessenger: Sunday, October 11, 2015

Good evening, Cougar Leaders. This is Mrs. MacWilliams calling with your weekly updates and reminders for the school week of Monday, October 12 - Friday, October 16.

The safety and welfare of our students is our number one priority at Carroll. Our building has a comprehensive Emergency Operations Plan in place, and in order to familiarize our school community members with their roles and responsibilities associated with this plan, we will be conducting a Lockdown drill this week. This will be a collaborative effort among Carroll faculty and staff, the WCPSS' Security Department, and local law enforcement.

The Carroll family enjoyed an epic pep rally last Thursday in celebration of our awesome athletics programs. Thank you to Ms. Rackley and our very talented band, Coach Keith and our super spirited cheerleaders, Coach Fish and our awesome volleyball girls, Coach Burch and our great soccer squad, and our tenacious football team headed up by Coaches Snarey, Sharpe, and Torr. It was an epic morning that was picked up by the ABC 11 news team. If you haven't seen the clip, visit the Cougar Chronicle at www.cougarltchronicle.blogspot.com.

In addition to athletics, clubs are in full swing at Carroll. Art, Beta, Theatre, and the League of Innovative Thinkers each have meetings this week. Please visit our master calendar for a detailed look at those dates and times.

This Friday, October 16 will be an early release day for all students. Dismissal will be held at 11:45 am.

We're looking forward to another awesome week filled with meaningful learning and teaching ahead at Carroll Leadership in Technology Magnet Middle School.

Have a great night!

SchoolMessenger: Sunday, October 4, 2015

Good evening, Cougar Leaders. This is Mrs. MacWilliams calling with your weekly updates and reminders for the school week of Monday, October 5 - Friday, October 9.

It's hard to believe that we are already in our 7th week of the 2015-2016 school year! Thank you so much to all of our students and families who supported our PTA's #WeAreCarroll No Fuss Fundraiser over the last couple of weeks. If you have not yet contributed, it's not too late to help us reach our $10,000 goal by Tuesday evening's PTA meeting, which will be held in the media center at 6:30 pm.

Due to the power outage that we experienced last Tuesday, our lockdown drill has been rescheduled for later this month.

Our Cougar Athletics Programs will compete against Carnage Middle School this week. Please join me in wishing our girls' soccer and volleyball teams the best of luck this Wednesday as they take on the Trojans at Carnage at 4:00 pm. Our football team will compete at home this Thursday, also at 4:00 pm. Show your support for our Cougars at the game, and then join us for a Carroll Dine-Out at Qdoba on Six Forks Road. It is sure to an evening of fun!

There are great prizes on the line for our students, and an opportunity for our parents to support instructional innovation at our school. $1, $5, $20, $100 --- whatever amount your family can raise, it will help.

This will be a collaborative effort among Carroll faculty and staff, the WCPSS' Security Department, and local law enforcement.

The first round of the 2015-2016 Tablet Rollout is in full swing. Over the next week, all students who submitted their completed tablet packages by Friday, September 18 will receive their tablets. As a friendly reminder, a parent/guardian must subscribe to Carroll's parent email distribution list in order for submitted packages to be considered complete. Thank you to the 508 families who have already met this requirement.

If your family is interested in sponsoring tablet insurance for a child or children other than your own, please contact our main office. Without insurance, our school is not be able to sustain our 1:1 program.

Epic First Day

Carpool

Good morning, Cougar Carpoolers! I can hear the sighs from the other side of this email. Carpool is not typically a popular topic.
At Carroll, we realize that our parents have obligations beyond transporting children to and from school. We live in a fast paced world and our schedules are chaotic at best. This is the reason that we are working diligently to establish clear procedures that support a safe and efficient carpool process. We are here to serve you.
When members of our school community follow carpool guidelines, the process runs smoothly and wait times decrease significantly. Conversely, when families choose to ignore communicated procedures, traffic patterns are disrupted, walking traffic slows the flow of vehicles, and wait times increase.
As a friendly reminder, all vehicles must enter our carpool by way of a right-hand turn off of Rowan. Left-hand turns are not permitted. Once on our campus, vehicles must fill up both lanes that run parallel to Rowan. This alleviates congestion throughout our neighboring streets. At the turn leading down to the sidewalk, vehicles merge to create a single line along our sidewalk, which marks our drop-off zone for students. Vehicles must pull as far forward as possible to expedite the drop-off and pick-up process.
Dropping students off on Rowan, Camelot, neighboring streets, or the bank parking lot is not permitted.
Thank you so much for your continuing support.

If your family utilizes our carpool, please note that some changes have been made to alleviate some congestion on the roads leading into our parking lot. The updated procedures have been posted to the Carroll website.

Communication is highly prioritized at our great school. In order to best serve your family, we are asking all parents and guardians to please subscribe to our mailing list by visiting our school website and completing the required information under CMMS Announcements. A parent subscription to our email distribution list will be required for our upcoming tablet rollout in late September.

Thank you to all of the Carroll families who joined us last week for our Cougar Camps, school tours, and our 7th & 8th grade schedule pick-up event. If you were not able to attend, please don't stress. Schedules will be available for students bright and early, upon arrival tomorrow morning.

All schedule change requests are due to the Guidance Office on Thursday, August 27. Forms have been posted to our school website and to the Cougar Chronicle.
